Norwegian Graduate School in Mathematics Education
Project summary
This is a first information. More will come
A Graduate School in Mathematics Education will make a direct impact on the quality of mathematics teacher education; this is an essential component in the effort to raise levels of pupils' performance in school. National and international studies reveal disappointing performance of Norwegian pupils in mathematics, and low in-take in professions that depend on mathematical competency. The national strategy for mathematics, science and technology recognises the need to improve mathematical education in schools.
The Graduate School will be a partnership of the Universities of Agder and Stavanger and the University Colleges of Bergen and Sør-Trøndelag. The School will organise seminars, workshops and summer schools for supervisors and students that will focus on the development of supervisor competencies and achieving international levels of excellence in research and publication in all fields within the discipline of mathematics education. The School will build on existing national leaders in mathematics education research and, through an International Reference Group and other eminent scholars establish an international network of researchers in mathematics education. This will facilitate the achievement of international levels of excellence in research and research education.
The School will offer travel grants to enable students to attend courses at partner institutions and mobility stipends that enable students to study for periods in international centres of excellence. The School will offer extensions to post-doctoral stipends so that stipend holders may develop supervisor skills alongside their personal research development. The activities of the School will open to all supervisors and students of mathematics education in Norway. The School will publish material aimed at achieving agreed common standards in research and research education; the School will make its programme and publications available through a web-site.
